Rackzar Launches Free Public Linux Mirror with 100 Gbps NAPAfrica Connectivity

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Rackzar Linux Mirror, a free, publicly accessible repository mirror hosted in South Africa and connected to NAPAfrica Cape Town at 100 Gbps.

This initiative forms part of Rackzar's ongoing commitment to supporting South Africa's internet infrastructure and the wider open source community.

By hosting popular Linux distributions locally, we aim to provide faster, more reliable access to software packages, system updates and installation resources while reducing reliance on international connectivity.

Supported Linux Distributions

Our mirror currently synchronises the following distributions:

These repositories are regularly synchronised to provide access to current packages and distribution files.

Why Use the Rackzar Mirror?

  • Local South African Hosting: Content is served directly from infrastructure hosted in Cape Town, reducing dependence on international routes.
  • 100 Gbps NAPAfrica Connectivity: Our connection to NAPAfrica Cape Town enables efficient delivery of repository content to networks accessing the mirror through local peering.
  • Improved Download Performance: South African users and hosting providers may benefit from lower latency and faster package downloads, depending on their network connectivity.
  • Free Public Access: The mirror is available to everyone, including individuals, developers, businesses, educational institutions and other hosting providers. You do not need to be a Rackzar customer.
  • Supporting Open Source: By contributing local infrastructure and bandwidth, we aim to strengthen the South African Linux and open source ecosystem.

How to Access the Mirror

The Rackzar Linux Mirror is available at: https://mirror.rackzar.net/

Users and system administrators can configure their Linux package managers to use the relevant Rackzar repository mirror.

We welcome the South African Linux community to make use of this service and encourage network operators, hosting providers and developers to take advantage of locally hosted repository access.
