How to reset your Ubuntu root password

How to reset your linux root or other user account password using noVNC or IPMI access.

 

Reboot your Virtual or Dedicated Server, please note that this method will require you to have IPMI/BMC or noVNC console access to your VM or Server.

Press ESC during first boot until you have the following screen then select "e" to edit.

Locate the following line that starts with "linux" it will often end with consol=ttyS0

edit this line to remove "ro console=tty1 console-ttyS0" and replace with "rw /init=/bin/bash" and F10 to commit and boot

You will now have root access to use "passwd" to reset you password
